Comparisons, Comparisons and Comparisons.... Life is all about comparisons. We are happy or sad just because of our Comparisons. "I have never compared my life with anything." - I guess a few might have said this on seeing my first sentence. Now let us take a few examples.



In a class room, if a student get B grade, it doesn't make him happy or sad. But when he got B while rest of the class received 'A' grade, you know what might be in his mind( and vice versa. When the rest of the class got 'C' grade) . Thus our studies are compared with others.

Now consider a couple. "Why my girlfriend/boyfriend is not calling like my roommate's friend? Does he/she really love me like the relation between my roommate and partner? ". or ""My husband doesn't love me much now, like he loved me in the beginning of our life” . I am quite sure something similar to this might have come across in many persons’ mind. Thus our love is compared.

"Why the hell, there are lot of work in my company while my friend in another company have not much work? He also have better salary than me" . How many of us have thought this? Thus our job and salary is also compared.

If you think you have not thought any of these , then we have more examples.

When you write the entrance exam, you will get a rank. What is it? Your score is compared with others and a rank list is set up. Thus even government is comparing you.

Now take the case of an IT company. Your performance is compared with your colleagues and a rank list will be made. You know what it is called.

When we say something is good or bad in Europe, we are comparing our culture with theirs.

Thus every moment in your life is compared. Ofcourse there is nothing wrong in comparing. It is this comparisons that made the so called development in the world. A small development when compared with previous experiment motivated scientists to continue experiments and create wonderful things that we enjoy today. It is this comparison, popularly known as 'competition' helped us to work hard to beat many of our classmates and reach good positions in life.

Thus zindagi sirf teen cheezon ke wajah se chalti hain,'Comparison,Comparison and Comparison' .

But a typical character that I have noticed among all is that, we use comparisons only for finding negatives.
I have seen many friends saying "My friend in XYZ company have more salary than me". We are in a country where people are working hard for a piece of bread. Why we are not comparing our salary with them? Aren't we really lucky to get atleast a five digit salary? We have all the facilities-TV, Fridge,Washing Machine, Computer, AC,mobile and all other electronic gadgets.We have parents, friends, siblings, job, girlfriend/boyfriend/husband/wife etc. We have everything that we need infront of us. But still we are not happy. why ? Please analysis and make a good starting in 2012.

A meeting with Manager

A Discussion in a relay and switch Manufacturing company. Raju is a worker in 'relay' manufacturing unit.

Manager : Please be seated.

Raju : Thank you Sir.

Manager : You are aware of what is grr (group race rating) right?You know you will be compared with your teammates. Before starting discussion , what you think about yourself? How was your work in last one year?

Raju : I am very proud of me sir. My target was to manufacture fifty thousand relays. But I have manufactured 75000 relays. fifty percent more than expectation.

Manager : Oh , really!!! But as you know we are checking the performance of everyone in our company.You know Ravi have manufactured 80,000 relays. Ram manufactured 70000 relays and 10000 switches.

Raju : But I have met 150% of the target. Isn't that an achievement?

Manager : hmm.. Now consider other facts. Have you published any document regarding the techniques you use to manufacture of relays?

Raju : No.

Manager : Ravi have published a document too...What about supporting colleagues? Have you supported any one for their hardwork in our company? Have you give a 'pat on the back' of anyone?

Raju : Sir , I had to work till midnight to read this target even 75 k, then how could I get time to talk to others?

Manager : That is not my fault.

Raju : I haven't even gone home on some nights.

Manager : We never told you to sit here till midnight.We told you to finish work.

Raju: How can I finish work after going home? I can't carry the relay unit with me.

Manager : I don't know.But you know you are not much efficient when compared to your peer group.

Raju : So what about my 150 % target achievement?

Manager : Our company will always appreciate that. We are thankful to you. But at the end of the day,others have done manythings more than you.So..

Raju : Thank god , there is no school in the world where they need students to score 150 marks out of 100 and still the student fails.Thank you sir for your feed back. Bye.


While coming out of conference room, Raju asked himself " Why I worked hard like this?" ...

19 th century

British Kingdom(Lord), Land lords and Common people(workers).


Land lord : Work hard. Representative of East India company came. They need 10% more rice as levy this time. We need to make it.
Workers : It is impossible. How can we make it possible , after that we don't have anything left to live.
Land Lord : I don't want to hear any excuses. I want more on next month when I come.

After a month

Land lord : How much rice?
Workers : If we do this, we and our children will starve to death.
Land Lord : Who cares you . I need it to give to Lord.

At Lord's palace :
Lord : Did you bring the levy? East India company is angry about you.
Land lord : Yes , here it is.
Lord : OK.Good. Take this as a gift from me.
Lord happy. Land lord got a small gold chain for his work. He is also happy. What about Workers?

21st Century


Client, IT company and Software Engineers .
Company : Work hard. Client told to finish work by end of next month.
Engineers : But it is very difficult sir. We have to work atleast 17-18 hours to finish task.
Company : I don't want to hear excuses. Work hard if you need salary. Else you can leave. We will find another person.
Engineers : We will do it.
After one month
Company : Did you finish work?
Engineers : Yes sir. It was really a difficult task . We really..
Company(not allowing to complete the words) : I don't want to know how you did. You did or not, that is the only thing I want to know. It is nice to hear that you guys finished it.I am paying for your work. Don't want to hear more.

At Client office

Company : sir, we have done the work .
Client : Hmm.. Good.
Company: Sir....
Client : Understood. Will give next project also to you.
Company: Thank you Sir.
Finally client is happy and Company is happy. Engineers??

200 years... Society changed. Persons changed.. But the same things are happening .
